Abstract

Background: Hypertension is one of the non-communicable diseases whose prevalence continues to increase and is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. This study aims to analyse the relationship between several risk factors, namely age, gender, marital status, education, family history, physical activity, stress, work environment, and diet, and the incidence of hypertension among fishermen, lecturers/employees, and street vendors in Medan City.

Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design with a sample size of 176 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via questionnaires and blood pressure measurements, then analysed using the chi-square test.

Results: The results of the study indicate that age (p = <0.001), marital status (p = <0.001), education (p = <0.001), physical activity (p = <0.001), Family history (p = 0.027), work environment (p = 0.026), and stress (p = 0.027) had a significant relationship with the incidence of hypertension. Meanwhile, gender (p = 0.076) and dietary patterns (p = 0.419) did not show a significant relationship.

Conclusion: It can be concluded that behavioural and environmental factors such as age, stress, education, and work conditions were significantly associated on the incidence of hypertension than genetic factors and dietary patterns. Therefore, preventive efforts through health education and improvements in the work environment are essential to reduce the risk of hypertension among private sector employees.
